It's been a long time coming and it's nearly here. But nearly is still too far away! I'm off on a motorbiking adventure with my biking partner in crime, Simon. We are flying to Bangkok, hiring bikes & setting off for 3 weeks around Thailand, Cambodia & Laos. Not too much planning, just enough to have a rough idea, but we're going to go with the flow when we get there. Some think we're mad, some are insanely jealous, but this will definitely be a big tick off my bucket list!
As a young child, I lived in Phnom Penh, Cambodia for several years. We left in 1968 & I have strong positive memories from my time there. I have always wanted to return & now I am. I especially cannot wait to visit Angkor Wat again. It will be interesting to see how many of my immature memories are sparked by returning. I have travelled quite extensively in Thailand before, but never on a motorbike and I have never visited Laos, so as long as we can negotiate the border crossings, I'll be interested to see the differences between the countries and peoples.
Our rough plan is ambitious, probably too ambitious according to Bernd, who we are hiring the bikes from. The distances we ideally want to travel are enormous in the time we have, and much as we love being on a bike, we do want to make time to rest up and explore, so we'll be adjusting the plan as we go. I hope to be able to write about the real people and the real country, so stick with me as I rant and rove! (subject to wifi coverage.) And if you, or someone you know has knowledge of anything roughly along our route, speak up! I'd love to have a dialogue with fellow adventurers...
